Porch Size

How Big Should My Porch Be?

How big should my porch be? This is a question many of our clients ask us when considering the addition of a porch or screened in porch. Here at Archadeck of Central SC, we like to meet with our clients during the planning stages for any project. During this meeting, together we’ll determine the size your porch needs to be to accommodate all your needs.

The first order of business when planning your porch is to clarify its function. Will it predominately be used for dining or gathering, or both? What other activities might it be used for?

We know it can be hard to visualize an outdoor room addition before it’s built. As your premier Columbia porch builder, Archadeck of Central SC thinks it’s important to envision yourself living in the space you are thinking about adding. Our design consultants can guide you because we have plenty of experience with this process.

If you plan to use your porch as an outdoor dining area, measuring your interior dining room can help determine realistic spatial requirements for dining outdoors. We recommend allowing plenty of room to pull out the chairs to a comfortable distance from the table. Try to visualize your porch all the way down to the size of your dining table and how you will congregate around it. These are the little details that go into planning your perfect-sized porch—details other porch builders may miss.

Additional Porch Sizing Considerations

Many of our clients use their porch or screened porch primarily as a living room or gathering spot. Planning an outdoor living room presents more porch sizing considerations to think about. What size sofa or chairs do you have in mind using? When determining the spatial requirements for furniture on a new porch addition, it’s wise to leave a clearance area. A good rule of thumb is to leave about four feet for ample room to walk around your furniture.

Will you be adding perimeter furniture such as seating, coffee or side tables or decorative furniture pieces? If the answer is yes, be sure to allow space for those pieces to fit comfortably without overcrowding your usable living space. It may help to measure the furniture in your indoor living room to get a realistic sizing comparison.

Here’s another question we are often asked during the porch planning stage with clients: is there is a “standard” or “common” size for a porch? Porch sizes can vary quite a bit, but 12×14 and 14×16 are porch sizes we build most frequently. A screened porch can feel smaller than an open porch with the same dimensions. The use of screens creates the feeling of a more enclosed space. An open porch, on the other hand, can seem like a boundless area since the space feels less defined. This is a factor to keep in mind when planning your porch size. Open or screened, your porch must be able to accommodate your furniture comfortably and allow space in between for you to flow through the room easily. This is why addressing your functional goals in the planning stage is so important.
